Advice and Representation at the Police Station
There cannot be enough emphasis placed on the fact that cases can be, and are, often won and lost at a Police Station.
Neither arrest, nor detention at a Police Station is a pleasant experience. To the contrary, it can be an extremely stressful experience. The foremost desire will be to secure release from the Police Station as fast as possible. However, it is highly likely that you will be questioned by the Police in a formal recorded interview.
You may also be required to partake in other investigative procedures such as searches, medical examinations, provision of samples etc. Availing yourself to legal advice in these situations is essential. Legal advice will inform you of what your rights are in relation to these procedures, how you should exercise such rights and the implications of exercising these rights. Each case is different and one size does not fit all.
As most people are not arrested by appointment (and very rarely at a convenient time) we provide a 24 hours a day, 365 days a year service.
We can be contacted on 07812060606, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in the case of an arrest emergency.
As nobody plans to get arrested, and due to an almost certain denial of access to the internet if arrested, we strongly urge that you place our telephone number in your "contacts" on your phone. It will also be handy if friends or family members are arrested.
Free funding
If you are arrested by the police or are asked to attend a police station as a volunteer, you are entitled to receive legal advice and assistance from a solicitor regardless of your income.
You are entitled to obtain advice from the solicitor of your choice. Accordingly, if you are arrested or asked to attend the police station by appointment, please call our office on 0207 485 6677 as soon as possible or arrange for the police to call us on your behalf. We provide 24 hour assistance to you in these circumstances and can be reached out of hours on our emergency number 07812060606.
What to do and what not to do
- If you are arrested, the Police are not permitted to ask you questions except in a formal interview. Do not answer any questions on the journey from the point of arrest to the Police Station
- Do not answer any Police questions or volunteer any information to the Police without seeking legal advice from us
- Upon arrival at the Police Station, you will be booked in and you will be told of your rights, one of them being your right to free and independent legal advice. Avail yourself to this right. We can be contacted on 07812060606, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
- Do not provide the Police with any sampled without seeking legal advice
- Always give the Police your correct name, date of birth and address. The Police carry out extensive procedures to correctly identify each arrestee. Any discrepancies in relation to your identity may extend your time in detention
- Do not be tempted to fly solo, even if you are told by the Police that "the lawyer will take ages to get there", or "it is only going to be a very quick interview and you can be out of here". Consider whether the Police would actually prefer to interview you without a lawyer and more importantly think about the long term implications, even if the foremost desire is to get out of there as quickly as possible
We are used to assist people at all hours and will have someone on standby to attend a police station at short notice. It is very rare that you will ever be waiting for a solicitor to attend. The police stations we regularly attend to include the following:
